Nile hippopotamus or river hippopotamus. It is a large semiaquatic mammal native to sub-Saharan Africa which requires enough water to immerse in, while being close to grass. Its name comes from the ancient Greek for “river horse”. It is the next largest land mammal after elephants and rhinoceroses. Hippos inhabit rivers, lakes, and mangrove swamps. The mean adult weight is around 1,500 kg.
