Groundnuts or peanuts. They are originally from South America, were they were grown by Indian communities. It was introduced to West-Africa by the Portuguese in the 16th century. From there it spread quickly, though faster in the interior of Africa than along the coast. With a production of 110,000 tons in 2017, the groundnut plays a lead role in the economic development of the Gambia.
