Madara Rider. The carved relief on a large rock in the Madara Plateau, east of Šumen (northeastern Bulgaria), represents a horseman 23 meters above the ground, on a nearly vertical cliff 100 meters high. The rider thrusts a spear into a lion at the foot of his horse. This monument is dated to 710 and is attributed to the ancient Bulgarians, a tribe of nomadic warriors who settled in the north-east of the country at the end of the seventh century.
