Idris I. Recognized as Emir of Cyrenaica by the United Kingdom in 1946, Mohammed Idris El-Mahdi El-Senussi was proclaimed King of Libya on December 24, 1951 when the country gained independence. On September 1, 1969, he was deposed by the coup of Muammar Gaddafi. Born March 12, 1889 in Jaghboub in Cyrenaica, he died on May 25, 1983 in exile in Cairo.
