Uhuru Torch. Literally “Torch of Freedom” in Swahili, it’s one of the national symbols of Tanzania. The kerosene torch represents freedom and light. It was first lit on top of Mount Kilimanjaro on December 9th, 1961 to symbolically shine the country and accross the borders. The Uhuru Torch race takes place every year starting from different locations throughout Tanzania.
