Traditional southern Chinese junk with a high poop, overhanging stern and two to five masts. It is a boat with a compartmentalized hull and fully battened square sails consisting of panels of linen or matting flattened by bamboo strips with sliding or reversible weave. By extension, junk refers to the typical rigging of these sailboats. Chinese junks sailed to Indonesian and Indian waters by the early Middle Ages.
