Mediterranean monk seal. This species of pinniped found in the Mediterranean is also present in the Atlantic on the coasts of Madeira, southern Morocco and Mauritania. The male measures on average 2.4 m long and weighs approximately 315 kg. Although it may occasionally feed on algae, the monk seal feeds mainly on fish, crustaceans, cuttlefish, octopus, crayfish and lobsters: as such, it has long been considered a “pest” by fishermen and exterminated, being also a source of fat and meat.
