Polynesian fare. Originally, the term “fare” means “house” in Tahitian. The fare was traditionally constructed of bamboo and covered with pandanus and palm leaves. Volcanic stones or coral stones were used as the base for the fare and sometimes to build the walls. Earth, sand and long grass covered the ground and ropes of pürau (bourao) or coconut fiber were used to bind the walls, partitions and roof.
