The Atomium. This iconic monument of Brussels, was built on the occasion of the Universal Exhibition of 1958. It represents the conventional mesh of the crystal of iron (centered cubic structure) magnified 165 billion times. It culminates at 102 m and consists of a steel frame bearing nine spheres of 18 m in diameter interconnected. It is located in Laeken on the Heysel plateau where this exhibition took place.
