Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) from a portrait by Raphaël. This Florentine poet, writer, thinker and politician is considered to be the “Father of the Italian language”. He is, with Petrarch and Boccaccio, one of the “three crowns” which imposed Tuscan as a literary language. A major poet of the Middle Ages, he is the author of the Divine Comedy, often considered to be the greatest work written in this language and one of the masterpieces of world literature.
