Soapstone sculpture of the ritual bird, protector of Zimbabwe. Made between the twelfth and fourteenth century, it is the most famous sculpture of the country. It is located in the ancient city of Great Zimbabwe, the former capital of the Monomatapa Empire in the southern Gokomere region. The city was then run by the Shonas, a people originally from southern Africa.
