Cowrie shell. This kind of shell belongs to various species of marine snails found in tropical waters. They were commonly used as money in Africa and many have been found in the tombs of the Egyptian pharaohs. The Ghanean denomination “Cedi” is native Fanti for “shell” in recognition of this original form of currency.
