African oil palm or eléis of Guinea. This tree is widely cultivated for its oil-rich fruits and seeds for food and industrial use. In the wild, it measures 20 to 25 meters. In the Gambia, the oil palm is native to the coastal plain. It is one of the smallest producers of palm oil in Africa, far behind Nigeria and the 41st worldwide with around 3,000 tonnes per year.
