Ship of the British East India Company off the coast of the island of St. Helena. As early as 1657, this company, founded in 1600, received from King Charles I the rights to govern the island. These rights were reinforced in 1673 by Charles II, who granted it the status of a free zone. This counter intended for supplying ships on the route to Cape Town and India experienced considerable growth from the 17th century until the opening of the Suez Canal.
