Oil refinery. It symbolizes the industry of the country under the socialist regime. Oil production in Romania is very old. In Ploiești, industrial oil production and a small refinery (the first in the world) were operational from 1857. Production was centered in the Plains of Pannonia. It peaked at 313,000 barrels/day in 1976 before decreasing to 79,000 barrels/day in 2016.
