Mayling orchid. The most famous Taiwan orchid was developed by the Shihlin Horicultural Station in suburban Taipei in 1946. This new variety, named the Mayling Orchid for Madame Chiang Kai-shek whose given name is Mayling, won top prize in international shows like in San Francisco in 1962. The Chinese have been growing orchids for 2,300 years and the subtropical climate makes Taiwan an ideal place for their cultivation.
