Baltic turbot. There is a small, but significant, genetic differentiation between turbot populations in the Baltic Sea and the Atlantic. This flatfish species lives in brackish water on sandy bottoms or gravel pits, from 10 to 250 m deep along the coast and on offshore banks. It has an asymmetric disk-shaped body, and has been known to grow up to 1 m long and 25 kg in weight. Due to overfishing the biggest turbots disappeared from the spawning stock.
