One Pillar Pagoda (Chùa Một Cột). Located to the northwest of Hanoi city, this pagoda was commissioned by the emperor Lý Thái Tông, who ruled from 1028 to 1054. Successively rebuilt in the thirteenth and twentieth centuries, it has been made of wood on a single stone pillar 1.25 m in diameter and 4 m in height. It is designed to look like a lotus flower, a symbol of Buddhist purity.
