American bison skull. The vast neighboring plains of Saskatchewan (Canada) and Montana (USA) were once home to huge herds of bison that were hunted by local Native American populations. The latter erected large piles of bison bones crowned by a skull to honor their spirits. They called these piles “oskana ka-asastēki” (piles of bones).
