Chimney Rock. This prominent geological rock formation in western Nebraska is rising nearly 91 m above the surrounding North Platte River valley. It was an important landmark for overland westward migration. “Towering to the heavens” is how one pioneer described Chimney Rock, the most recognized landmark along the Oregon Trail, the California Trail, and the Mormon Trail during the mid-19th century.
