Mount Rushmore. Four US presidents have been carved in the middle of the Black Hills in the US state of South Dakota since October 1941. Every summer between 1927 and 1941, the sculptor John Gutzon, together with almost 400 workers, blew up, hammered and chiseled the most important presidents of the United States at the time: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.
